Thank you for liking “Autumn Splendor” and for this thought-provoking poem. You are right. At some point, you realize that your own death is inevitable. We are not built to last forever, and sooner or later we will die whether we want to or not. It is also frightening and frustrating that we do not know what awaits us after death. However, would you want to live forever if you could?

What I find sort of frightening are the cloning experiments and the interest in trying to preserve people by downloading their memories into a computer. Then there are the cryogenically frozen people waiting to be revived at a later time. Like you, I am glad that we do not have to worry about being immortal just yet, but there may be a time in the future when this could be a realistic possibility for people.

Some of what you mention above is still science fiction, cloning does not keep memories (lots of animals have gone through that), cryogenically frozen people are around but not sure they will ever wake up. What is more possible is improvement in genetics to allow us longer life and slow break up of human cells to prolong life etc. Similarly advance in medical sciences also could cure big killer diseases (cancer, dementia, cardiac) of humans and for the wealthy perhaps not so long in the future it may be possible to have a much longer life.

These efforts to prolong life sound promising. I do not mind if researchers focus more on longevity than immortality. I also hope that some of the things I mentioned will remain science fiction. When I think about the spotty track record of humankind, I dread to think what kind of warped immortality we could create. I think I have read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein one too many times. 🙂
